Volkskerk Van Afrika , Cape Town
The following gives a brief resumé of how the Volkskerk van Afrika was started in Cape Town: - Joseph John Henry Forbes, fifth son of John and Helena Forbes, of Heatherdale Farm Wesleyan School and Mission Station, Rondebosch Flats, after his spiritual awakening in 1896, which was later further helped by a visit from Gipsy Smith , and after a long probation, first as principal of the Wesleyan Day School, West London, now Athlone, then catechist, then evangelist, was admitted on the recommendation of the Rev. G. Robson, on about five years’ probation for the Wesleyan Methodist Ministry in 1913, at the Port Elizabeth Conference. After his ordination to the ministry, in the Buitenkant Street Wesleyan Church, Cape Town, by the Rev. Samuel Clarke , President of the Wesleyan Conference , assisted by the Rev. George Robson and six other ministers, on Monday evening,

L.H. Crotz, Superintendent: 1984 – 1995)
My dear Children,
For my 21st pastoral I am sending you the inauguration address, delivered in the City Hall on Sunday, 14 May 1922.
Study it well. This is the model on which we must build, placing our beloved Church on equal footing with the best in modern Society.
THE RISE OF THE VOLKSKERK VAN AFRIKA
Ladies and Gentleman, Christian Friends, we have met to celebrate a very auspicious occasion as far as the Coloured people of Africa are concerned. At the outset it is expected of me as leader of this movement to give a brief resumé of the rise of the Volkskerk van Afrika.
In doing so, I want at once to say this is no antagonistic movement, but purely and simply a Church, built on the faith of Jesus Christ the Son of God and His Holy Apostles.
